As some of you know, I often collaborate with a fellow scholar named Chris Young, a historian at Indiana University Northwest. We teamed up on some tours of the Back of the Yards area of Chicago (the setting of Upton Sinclair’s novel The Jungle), and we soon will be leading a tour of Philadelphia for America 250.
I invited Chris to join me here on Mind Inclined for a conversation about one of America’s most famous historical paintings: John Trumbull’s The Declaration of Independence. I think you will enjoy hearing about Trumbull, his interactions with Thomas Jefferson, and the painstaking efforts he made to create a realistic representation of a pivotal moment in American history.
